step·deal

ˈstep /dēl

noun

A deal whose terms change as certain benchmarks are hit.

In screenwriting, a step deal refers to incremental payments owed to the writer as they complete multiple drafts of the work.

In music licensing it could refer to a deal that is favorable to the filmmaker during their festival run, but becomes increasingly costly if the film receives distribution, performs well at the box office, etc.
